VODACOM, MTN and RAIN are preparing for e-sim cards in SA. – Here’s how it will work.

The two biggest cellular network suppliers in South Africa, Vodacom and MTN, and newcomer Rain, intend to accommodate eSIM cards by 2020.

An eSIM card is integrated into a smartphone and must be enabled in order to be functional by a mobile network.

Like a traditional SIM card, it enables customers to make calls, surf the internet, or send emails to mobile networks.

Both ASIM and an eSIM can be used together in one device, enabling customers to access distinct networks on one machine. A number of systems such as the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xr, Samsung Galaxy S9, and Samsung Galaxy S9 +-already have eSIMs.

In March 2019, Vodacom was the first South African company to introduce accommodate eSIM cards with the Samsung Galaxy Watch.

We are presently targeting eSIM assistance for other appliances in the first half of 2020,” a Vodacom spokesman informed South Africa Business Insider.

MTN said it would finalize its eSIM service in consultation with producers.

Newcomer Rain said that launching the new sim cards like (eSIM) cards, will depend on its capacity to launch an internet RICA platform where their customers would be able to register their SIM cards without standing in queues.

Meanwhile, Cell C said that most new mobile phones still don’t have e-SIM cards, so it would only launch technology when most devices do.
